Helpful Hints 2012: To continue our series on the importance of play. #2 Play Switches To Our Creative Side Of The Brain: We have all heard he/she is more right brain oriented or left brain…meaning right brain is creative and left brain is more logical. This theory of the structure and functions of the mind suggests that the two different sides of the brain control two different “modes” of thinking. It also suggests that each of us prefers one mode over the other. To foster a more whole-brained scholastic experience, teachers/parents should use techniques that connect with both sides of the brain. So many people live only in their logical decision making left brain. But our childlike nature, our imagination and often our ability to creatively problem solve is in our other side and play is the bridge there. Play is the foundation of learning.

Helpful Hints 2012:  As adults we probably think play is just a way to keep the kids occupied so we can cook dinner, make a phone call, run a report.  But the reality of it is play does the same thing for kids as it does for adults which is provide us with the ability to cope. You say “What?” Think about it: Dr. Ginsberg speaks about all the negative things that kids get into, ranging from biting their nails to to taking drugs, really comes from searching for ways to cope, to take the tightness out of the day. Play is a way to get there with only good side effects.  #1 Play Focuses The Mind: When we play, we focus on the puzzle, the game card, the Lego pieces, and this very act of focusing on one thing relieves us.  More “Importance of Play” tips in upcoming blogs – stay tuned. Shopping At The Mart! We are lucky to have The Mart right here in Atlanta and be able to see a lot of fun new toys early in the year.  New product is starting to arrive daily and then it is off to Toy Fair in NYC to see even more!  Can’t find it, call us and maybe we already have it or can find it for you.

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to ALL our Bean Head Friends! Have a fun and safe holiday.  BHT will resume normal business hours starting 12/26: M-S 10-6 and Sun. 12-4.

Tension: Kids have tension just like adults, but they have different ways to banish stress through play. Using Music: Music therapist know that music has a special place in transcending the rigors of life and creating a stage for relaxation. That makes it a great remedy for academic anxiety.
